Bill Nye_2Riding the coattails of the successful homosexual movement, transgender advocates have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years. Transgenderism, the medical term is gender dysphoria, upholds the claim that it is possible to make a separation between the biological sex of an individual and that same person’s gender identity.

To put it another way, transgenderism claims that there really are women trapped in men’s bodies. Transgender advocates believe that science supports their view and that broader society has an obligation to accede to their demands to normalize what not that long ago was considered deviant behavior.

One particularly glaring, and as one critic described it “cringe worthy,” example of claimed scientific support for transgenderism was seen recently on Bill Nye The Social Justice Guy’s Netflix program Bill Nye Saves the World.

Using the cover of science to advance his evolving personal beliefs about the validity of transgenderism, Nye featured a performance by actress Rachel Bloom of a rap song titled “My Sex Junk,” the lyrics of which I just can’t bring myself to include in this blog post. If you have a strong stomach, you can read more about this charming little ditty here and here.

Trump_Syria_MissilesThis past week, what has it brought? Quite a bit and nothing good. At least that’s how it looks from where I sit. Among the gifts that came our way were a flip-flopping president, wars and rumors of wars, and the traditional IRS tax deadline.

Put Not Your Trust In Princes

The psalmist tells us, “Put not your trust in princes, not in the son of man, in whom there is no help.” Wise words those, and one’s that Christians would do well to heed when talking politics. And the words and actions of President Trump drove this point home this past week.

America First. That was a consistent motto of Trump the candidate.

This platform was not original with Trump. It hearkened back to the days prior to WWII when a movement by that name arose. The goal America Firsters was to keep America out of WWII.

In Trump’s case, it was a reference to the many ongoing conflicts the US has found itself in.

Trump made a number of excellent statements during the campaign about having better relations with Russia and ending America’s involvement in Syria.

Trump questioned NATO calling it obsolete. And he was exactly correct in doing so.

But this past week, Trump repudiated all this.

Late last week, on the flimsiest pretext, he lobbed 59 Cruise missiles at Russia’s ally Syria. This one act likely destroyed any hope of Trump ever repairing relations with Russia and embroiled the US deeper than ever in the Syrian conflict, a war which the US has no business fighting.

charlotte-riots

Image from the riots in Charlotte, NC.

Another week. Another race riot. I realize putting it that was seems to trivialize what is a very serious situation in Charlotte. But really, this whole Black Lives Matter burnin’ down the house routine got old a long time ago.

And to make matters worse, there are reports indicating that the majority of those arrested in connection with the Charlotte riots aren’t even from North Carolina let alone from the local Charlotte area. As the spokesman for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Fraternal Order of Police told CNN,

This is not Charlotte that’s out here. These are outside entities that are coming in and causing these problems. These are not protestors, these are criminals.

We’ve got the instigators that are coming in from the outside. They were coming in on buses from out of state. If you go back and look at some of the arrests that were made last night. I can about say probably 70% of those had out-of-state IDs. They’re not coming from Charlotte.

According to a Washington Times
report, “For all its talk of being a street uprising, Black Lives Matter is increasingly awash in cash, raking in pledges of more than $100 million from liberal foundations and other eager to contribute to what has become the grant-making cause du jour.”

And among the biggest donors to the cause is, you guessed it, none other than George Soros himself, who is said to have given $33 million in grants to the cause.

During the Ferguson riots, the genesis of the Black Lives Matter movement, the UK’s Daily Mail reports that Soros’ money, “was reportedly funneled into keeping up numbers of protesters in the community over a period of months by bringing in outside activists.”

Soros has repeatedly shown himself willing to sow discord if he believes it benefits his pet causes.  Are we seeing a replay of this in Charlotte?

Well, we had quite a week this past week. Crooked Hillary became deplorable Hillary became collapsing Hillary. The tide bad economic data kept rolling in. There was more evidence (as if we needed any) that there is very little of Christianity left in our nation’s mainstream culture.

Deplorable Hillary

For someone who’s always seemed to lack a sense of humor, Hillary managed to inject a healthy dose of LOL humor last week with her “basket of deplorables” speech. Based on her comments, about 25% of the US population qualified for deplorable status due to their, drum roll please, racism, sexism, homophobia, Islamophobia and/or whateverophobia.

For my part, I’m glad she said what she said and don’t think she should take back any of it. I rather enjoy it when people speak their mind. At least we know where we all stand. In that regard, it’s a bit like Obama’s “‘bitterly clinging to their guns and religion” comments a few years back. Hillary was trying to gain SJW street cred with her LGBT friends and Barbara Streisand. And who am I to deny her such an honor?

Of course, this is a bit self-serving on my part. After all, I find her lying, war-mongering, Saul Alinsky loving, oligarch schmoozing, feminist, anti-American, crony capitalist, charity fraudster self to be not a little deplorable, and, as I would like to preserve my right to say so, I’m more than willing to grant her free rein to bare her soul to the world.

It was the very next day that Hillary collapsed like the twin towers at the 911 ceremony in New York. We can only hope that her campaign does likewise.

As a closing thought on the Hillary, I believe that while it is necessary to point out her many lies, appalling record as Secretary of State, and ideological unfitness to serve as president, it is not sufficient. There are many outlets capable of doing that. As I have pointed out elsewhere, as a Christian I must also object to the idea of a woman president. Period. As Isaiah tells us, female rulers are a sign, not of a healthy society, but of a ruined nation. Only by pointing out this rather unpopular point can a Christian writer be said to have done his job with respect to Mrs. Clinton’s campaign.

The Marines

Time was when the recruiting slogan of the US Marine Corps was The Few, The Proud, The Marines. Petty catchy, that. But, alas, such talk is unfit for the new order of the ages which is fast upon us.

No, in times like these, more inclusive slogans are what’s needed. And after reading this piece from the Army Times, I think I have just what the PC doctor ordered. From henceforth, I propose that the Marines use the following, safe-space approved slogan: The Few. The Proud. The Transgendered.

As the story, titled “Sailors, Marines will be able to declare transgender status this fall,” reports,

Following the Defense Department’s lifting of the ban on transgender service members in June, the Navy Department is preparing to provide medical and administrative support for transitioning sailors and Marines, train personnel on the particulars of serving in a transgender-inclusive force and, by next summer, accept transgender recruits into boot camp….transgender sailors and Marines may serve openly and cannot be involuntarily separated or denied re-enlistment for their gender identity…

When I showed this to a friend at lunch today, his reaction was, “The end is near.” And really, it’s hard to argue with his comment. The government really has only two jobs, punishing evildoers – this Biblical provides justification for, among other things, a nation having a defense force – and praising the good, which means the laws put forth by the civil magistrate ought to line up with the Ten Commandments.

transgender restroomIt seems almost impossible to have any contact with day to day events in this country without soon coming across some discussion about the issue of transgender persons, those individuals, “whose gender expression or behavior does not conform to that typically associated with the sex to which they were assigned at birth” (Answers to Your Questions About Transgender People, Gender Identity and Gender Expression, APA).

In early 2015, the suicide of a young man from the Cincinnati are who identified as female garnered national and international attention. The case of Olympic champion Bruce Jenner has been an even more high-profile case of transgenderism. Now, the state of North Carolina is grabbing headlines for its so-called “bathroom bill” which requires all persons to use the public restroom that corresponds to the sex assigned to them on their birth certificate.

Since transgenderism has become such a high profile issue, it is important for Christians to think through matter carefully. Below are a few common intellectual fallacies related to transgenderism that Christians ought to avoid, in order to speak effectively to aggressive and unbiblical transgender movement.

The Bible is not a textbook on transgenderism

Many individuals, perhaps even some believers, labor under the assertion that the Bible has nothing to say about transgenderism. This then becomes an excuse for seeking truth about transgenderism, not from the Word of God, but from secularists of one sort or another.

Many people believe that modern science furnishes us with truth about transgenderism. But science is not a source of truth. Any truth.

At its best, science can provide useful opinion on this or that topic. But it can never provide truth in the sense of giving us final, once and for all objectively factual statements.

There are two main reasons for this. First, science relies on observation. That is to say, science is empirical. But empiricism is deeply flawed. “Seeing is believing,” is a common empirical expression. But probably all of us have had our eyes play tricks on us. Observation is not so reliable as we would like to think.

Second, the scientific process of experimentation relies on the logical fallacy of asserting the consequent to reach its conclusions. To steal an everyday example John Robbins has used, consider the statement: If my battery is dead, my car won’t start. Most of us would agree with this proposition. But then we decide to do an experiment and try to start our car. We turn the key and, lo and behold, our car won’t start. Therefore, we conclude, our battery must be dead.

Now any good mechanic could spot the problem here: there are other reasons that a car won’t start that have nothing to do with the battery being dead. Jumping to the conclusion that the battery must be dead is an example of asserting the consequent. This is a logical fallacy. And it is the same logical fallacy that underlies the entire enterprise of scientific experimentation.

And because science is based on a logical fallacy, it can never furnish us with truth. The most science can do is provide us with useful opinion. Nothing more.

By contrast, the Bible is a complete system of revealed truth.

To cite just one passage from Scripture that makes this claim, “All Scripture is inspired by God (God breathed) and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16, 17). This includes the good work of Christian commentary on current events, even the issue of transgenderism.

To quote John Robbins, “The Bible is a textbook – or rather, the Bible is the textbook. Let all other books conform. And let us, as Christians, reject the sophistry of those who devalue the Scriptures by making them inadequate for all our intellectual needs” (Robbins, Is the Bible a Textbook?).

Obama at White House .png

President Obama during a news conference at the White House

It’s been another tough week to be a Christian in America. Lately, there seem to be more and more such weeks. It gets to be a bit tiresome. But more than that, it can get to be downright depressing.

I’m referring, as you may have guessed, to the latest example of our federal government calling good evil and evil good, this time in the form of “guidance” to educational institutions about how to handle issues concerning transgender students.

The guidance was released on Friday, 5/13 in a letter signed by officials from not one, but two cabinet level departments, the Department of Justice and Department of Education. You can read the full text of the letter here.

The practical result of the guidance from the Obama administration, if it is applied, is, among other things, to open to open what are currently women’s only restrooms, locker rooms and sports teams to transgender women (a transgender woman is a person born male but who identifies as a female, a so-called woman trapped in a man’s body).

To put it more bluntly, the Obama administration believes that men should be able to use the women’s restroom.

Obama, it would seem, is willing to pay any price and bear any burden in the unrelenting pursuit of dumping as much moral filth on America as possible before his term expires.

And from all appearances, he’s succeeding admirably.

But how did it come to this? How is it possible for something so manifestly wrong to seem like the very height of wisdom to many in our society?

Philosophically, it would seem that the groundwork for this was laid in the 19th century. Soren Kierkegaard famously located truth in the “infinite passion” of the individual believer rather than in any objective standard outside of him. From this we get the popular notion that it matters not what a man believes, so long as he is sincere.

Twentieth century existentialists bear some responsibility here as well.  According to existentialist  Simone de Beauvoir, “One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.”  In other words, what we are is not a matter of how God created us, which is the Christian view, but instead a result of the choices we make.

This is a prescription for madness. It’s also complete nonsense.

In our sinful, fallen world, it is an easy thing to find people who sincerely believe all manner of nonsense. One man imagines he’s Julius Caesar, another that he’s Napoleon Bonaparte. But so what? There’s no great movement to accommodate such individuals. We may humor them. We may pray for them. If they’re a danger to themselves or to others, we may commit them to an institution. But there is no reason to take their claims seriously. And almost no one does.

But there’s an even better tool for refuting the claims of those unfortunates under the sway of the erroneous notions of contemporary gender studies.

The Word of God tells us plainly that God created man male and female. Further it states in plain language that homosexual and transgender behavior is sinful. It doesn’t take a Luther or a Calvin to understand this. Any ordinary, honest Christian with a Bible can prove it.

The Bible alone is the Word of God and it has a monopoly on truth. And all the incessant talk about the supposed civil rights of men trapped in women’s’ bodies or women trapped in men’s bodies is, to borrow a Biblical turn of phrase, imagining a vain thing. There are no such persons.

I doubt not but that there are those in the transgender community who sincerely believe their own rhetoric. As Christians and fellow sinners, we ought to pray for them. We ought to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to them. Perhaps God in his grace will save some. But there is no compelling reason to listen to them, or to those in government who seek further to push the ungodly transgender agenda on our nation.
