There are some, I suppose, that would criticize this view by saying that Donald Trump has done and said things that he should have done or said and that it’s inappropriate for a Christian to support him. I would respond that he has indeed done and said things that he shouldn’t have done and said, as have all of us sinners. As I pointed out in a piece I wrote shortly before the election in 2016, there’s only one man in history who hasn’t done or said things that he shouldn’t have done or said, but he wasn’t on the ballot, not in 2016 or 2024. As such, we were once again faced with the choice of voting for a sinner for president. For my part, I would rather vote for a sinner who, for all his faults, loves America and the American people rather than one who holds them both in contempt.
When I say that Donald Trump loves America, I mean that he is one of the rare politicians who sees his job as working for the good of those he represents. This seems like a relatively low bar for any politician. After all, isn’t the job of any head of state to work for the benefit of his nation? Yes, it is. But one of the striking aspects of the contemporary West is that all Western governments, Hungary being the one exception that I know of, hate their own people and are actively working to destroy them. Keir Starmer in Britain has earned the nickname “two-tier Keir” for his leniency toward crimes committed by foreigners living off the British people while coming down like a ton of bricks on the natives if any of them get out of line and dare question why they are being forced to pay for their own displacement. The French government hates the French. German Chancellor Olaf Scholtz and his party hate the Germans. Our neighbor to the north has a prime minister who despises Canadians. The outgoing administration of “Jesuit” Joe Biden truly detests ordinary Americans. Biden’s recent calling of Trump supporters “garbage” is just the latest evidence how much he hates the American people.
For my part, I’m tired of being punished by my own government while not having been convicted of any crime. The really odd thing about the Democrats is that they promised more of the same in a Kamala Harris administration and seem shocked that they lost. Their message was, in effect, we hate and despise you; now come and vote for us so we can punish you even more. To which the American people rightly responded, yeah, no.
Pro-tip for the Dems, it’s probably not good for your future electoral success to spend years calling half or more of the country Nazis, fascists, Hitler, racists, white supremacists, domestic terrorists, transphobic, homophobic, toxic, etc. It tends to make people seriously dislike you.
We Americans dodged a bullet last week, and I thank God for that. But we can’t fall into the trap of supposing that this is the end of the matter and that we can sit back and let others handle things. That’s partially how we got into this mess in the first place. As Christians, we are responsible for actively engaging in what goes on in our families, churches, communities, and nation. Christian teachers need to repent of false teaching and return to teaching the non-contradictory truths of the 66 books of the Bible. Men need to lead their families, and parents need to raise their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. We must pray for Donald Trump “and all those who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life.” Further, we must keep on top of what our elected officials are doing, praise them when they do well, and let them know when they go astray.
The bad guys aren’t giving up. Antichrist isn’t taking a day off. Neither can the Lord’s people.
