It turns out that this was a bogus argument. As the Twitter files released by Elon Musk in late 2022 revealed, the censorship at Twitter was driven not by a private company conducting business as it saw fit but was directed by the FBI, etc., to suppress stories critical of the regime narrative and boost other ones that supported it. In other words, the government was using a private company to attack Americans’ First Amendment right of free speech. Students of political philosophy will recognize the proper term for such “partnerships” between private industry and government. The correct word for such an arrangement is fascism.
Fast forward to August 2024. The word out of France is that the founder of Telegram, a popular free speech internet platform, a man by the name of Pavel Durov, was arrested in France under allegations that “his platform has been used for money laundering, drug trafficking, and other offenses.”[1]
Free speech has been under attack in Great Britain for some time, but recently took a horrifying turn for the worse. British patriots sick of being preyed upon by their government’s favorite clients, the welfare migrants imported into the country by the millions, are being sent to jail for posting their grievances on Facebook. Not satisfied with jailing the British for speaking their minds, London’s Metropolitan Police chief threatened to “come after” citizens of other countries for violating British speech laws on the internet.
It’s a similar situation in America. Tim Walz, the socialist governor of Minnesota, attacked the First Amendment in a recent interview, saying, “There’s no guarantee to free speech on misinformation or hate speech and especially around our democracy.”[2]
Jewish groups in the US have aggressively pushed for laws requiring loyalty oaths to Israel and seeking to punish anyone for criticizing Jews or Israel. As noted in this space earlier this year,[3] the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Antisemitism Awareness Act, a law that, if enacted, would outlaw the teaching of some parts of the New Testament on American college campuses. In response to the House passing this law, conservative influencer Charlie Kirk posed a question in an X post, “Did the House of Representatives just make parts of the Bible illegal?” To which Tucker Carlson responded, “Yes. The New Testament.”[4]
In April of this year, Congress passed a sell-or-ban bill for TikTok. At least in part, this bill was passed at least in part at the behest of the ADL, a Jewish group with no respect for the First Amendment, because the ADL wanted to shut down criticism of Israel on that platform.[5]
Other examples could be provided, but these should make it sufficiently clear that free speech is under serious attack by the forces of tyranny, and Christians need to be aware.
Why should Christians be concerned about the loss of free speech? In the first place, the First Amendment guarantees that we have the right to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ freely. “Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” as the Apostle Paul wrote. If we can’t preach, how shall anyone hear and believe? Secondly, Christians should care about the First Amendment because it guarantees our ability to criticize the government. History is littered with examples of tyrants who dealt with criticism of their policies by jailing or executing their critics. But in a Christian republic, government officials are not above criticism. They must answer to the people, whose servants they are.
As things stand, free speech hangs in the balance in the West. Political Romanism, political Judaism, and political Islam are all opposed to free speech, as it challenges their false religious dogma. Secular tyrants also hate free speech as it allows critics to challenge their grandiose and foolish plans. But while all these groups agree that free speech is a bad thing and needs to be banned from the face of the earth, political Protestantism, that is, Biblical political theory and practice, speaks this way, “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land, unto all the inhabitants thereof.”[6]

The First Amendment reads in part, “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.” There is no exception for so-called “misinformation” or “hate speech.” Further, the United States is not and never has been a democracy. It is a constitutional republic.

Exactly Steve: Luther said the 3 things in this world that are against the Gospel is Romanism, Judaism, and Islam. Nothing has changed, we just have more modern conveniences – cars and computers.
