But the problems go back much further than that. The fascism of FDR’s New Deal was introduced in the 1930s shortly before my parents were born. Going back a generation earlier, the Federal Reserve and the Income Tax were established right around the time my grandparents came into the world. Each of the last three generations of my family has seen declining liberty, advancing tyranny, and growing immorality. That is, each of the last three generations of my family has experienced the collapse of the West that Gordon Clark wrote about in his 1952 book A Christian View of Men and Things. It is for this reason that I say last Tuesday’s vote was not the first step in America’s decline. It’s been going on for a long time.
But I don’t want to be overly hard on the article. It does make some good points. It was disturbing to see the constitutional amendment win. And not only win but win by the decisive margin of 56% to 44%. Rather than say the vote marked the first step in America’s descent, it would be better to say that the vote marked an inflection point in American politics where the slippery slope just got a bit steeper and slipperier.
The pro-abortion group behind the ballot initiative ran a good campaign. I say “good campaign” from a technical perspective. Not in the sense that I agree with their message. They were out in force with ads that made the proposal seem like the very image of middle-class reasonability. After all, we were told in the ads, how could anyone be so unreasonable as to force a rape victim to deliver the rapist’s child? Only a wild-eyed MAGA wingnut would support that! But only 1% of women have abortions due to rape. An even smaller number of abortions are due to incest. Overwhelmingly, abortions are sought for convenience, not for the sort of terrible situations the pro-death groups want to you believe.
Worth noting, too, is that a great deal of the money supporting the passage of Issue 1 (the proposed constitutional amendment to enshrine abortion rights in Ohio’s constitution) came from out of state.[2]
The other major ballot initiative in Ohio on Tuesday was Issue 2, which proposed making the sale of marijuana legal and taxable in the state. This also garnered some national attention, though not so much as the abortion vote.
My own theory on the increasing acceptance of recreational marijuana usage is that it is supported by some people in high places as a way of allowing common folks to self-medicate themselves into oblivion. Maybe they don’t have a job, a family, or any real future, but hey, they can always get high and forget about their troubles for a while. Such people are not much of a threat to the powers that shouldn’t be who have run our once great nation into the ground. I can’t prove that. It’s more of a hunch. But marijuana and other such prole feed, as Orwell termed it, could serve as a convenient pressure release valve for tyrants as our nation continues its long downward spiral.
As a side note, one wonders if former Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner, the long-time representative from Ohio’s Second Congressional District, was in any way behind Issue 2. Boehner, a Roman Catholic who along with Nancy Pelosi invited Jesuit Pope Francis to come and lecture Congress and the American people in 2015, has become quite the weed tycoon since he left office.[3] So much for those all-American conservative values he ran on as a freshman congressman in 1994. If nothing else, Boehner’s metamorphosis into Cheech Marin should be a warning to Christians not to trust Roman Catholic conservatives with the task of upholding our republic.
