Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) promised a migrant invasion of the United States and he actually delivered. How many politicians can say that?
“Soon, very soon, after the victory of our movement, we will defend migrants all over the American continent and the migrants of the world who, by necessity, must abandon their towns to find life in the United States…It’s a human right we will defend.”
These were the words of then Mexican presidential candidate, and now president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, or AMLO as he is known south of the border.
When I first read those words as reported in the 6/22/18 edition of the Daily Caller, a number of thoughts went through my mind. First off, it was hard not to see this statement as a threat. AMLO was very clearly articulating his intention to facilitate a migrant invasion of the United States. Second, quite obviously his rhetoric was based on Roman Catholic Social Teaching, which holds that need creates an obligation to give. This is the essence of the unchristian notion of altruism. Third, I was struck by just how weird the comment was. I mean, imagine, if you will, Donald Trump running on a platform promising to defend the right of every American to migrate to Canada. No one would ever get elected on such a promise. Not in the US at any rate. But in Mexico, apparently, it’s a big seller.
It was the comment by AMLO that prompted me to write my series Mexico, Mass Migration and the Example of Moses. You may read the first of the 23 installments of this series here. The remaining installments are also posted on this blog.
Fast forward ten months and I have to say I marvel at AMLO’s awesome ability to actually keep his election promises. As anyone who follows politics knows, politicians make promises all the time they have no intention of keeping. Put another way, many of them are professional liars.
But AMLO, that guy’s cut from a different cloth. When he said he’d defend the right of everyone in the entire world to migrate to the US, he wasn’t joking. Who knew?
Apparently the Trump administration didn’t take AMLO seriously. It was late last summer that the first of the big caravans from Honduras began wending its way through Mexico, northward to the US border. There were some border skirmishes in the area of Tijuana and San Ysidro, but then the caravans faded from the news after the first of the year.
Yet over the past few months, although the caravans have not made many front pages, they haven’t disappeared. In fact, they seem to be bigger than ever.
But for all that, the response from the Trump administration has been, at least so far as I can tell, weak. It’s gotten so bad that even the mainstream media, the very folks that for months were telling us all that the migrant surge and border emergency were all figments of our deplorable imaginations, have had to admit the situation is dire.
So what’s the plan from Trump? At this point, I couldn’t tell you. He keeps talking about the wall, but to date, not one foot of new wall has been built where none was previously. For all this administration’s boasting about construction on the border, all they’ve done is replace old wall with new wall. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it’s not what Americans were promised.
Now why is it that Trump cannot keep his promises, but AMLO makes it happen?
Since when did America become a can’t do nation?
