So how is it that Western civilization has come to this point? How is it possible that the West is actively erasing itself and there seems to be no way out?
The answer to these questions is found in John Robbins’ comment in the Foreword to Gordon Clark’s A Christian View of Men and Things. Robbins wrote, “A Christian View of Men and Things presents the argument that the West is disappearing because Christianity, on which Western civilization was built, has already virtually disappeared in the West.”
It was the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century that created Western civilization, and it is the disappearance of Biblical Christianity from the West that is leading to its erasure from the face of the earth.
This erasure of the unfaithful nations of the West should come as no surprise to anyone acquainted with the Old Testament, the pages of which are replete with God’s warning of what would happen to Israel if the people broke the covenant given to them through Moses. One such warning can be found in 2 Kings 21:13 “And I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria, and the plummet of the house of Ahab: and I will wipe Jerusalem as a man wipeth a dish, wiping it, and turning it upside down.”
It’s worth asking this question, if God so dealt with unfaithful Samaria and Jerusalem under the old covenant, it is reasonable that we should expect him to work the same under the new covenant? The answer is, of course, yes, it is entirely reasonable to expect him to work in the same way. God does not change, and his methods of dealing with his erring people do not change. The nations that were touched by the Reformation were greatly blessed by it. They became the freest, most prosperous nations on earth through the widespread preaching of, and belief in, the gospel of justification by belief alone. But Protestant churches have been going apostate for at least 200 years, and the chickens are coming home to roost in a big way.
As a Presbyterian, I can speak of my own tribe as a classic case of the effects of apostasy. There was a time when you could go into a mainline Presbyterian church and hear the gospel. In 2023, you won’t hear the gospel in the PCUSA, but you will find female pastors and elders and probably a gay wedding ceremony or two. What was once a faithful church is become a synagogue of Satan. This is not to say that there are no faithful Presbyterians and no faithful Presbyterian churches. But you’ll have to go to the smaller Presbyterian denominations to find them.
Ultimately, the problems of the West are not political or economic in nature. They are spiritual. Unless there is repentance and turning to God in nations of the West, there is no reason to expect them to avoid the fate of Israel and Judah in the Old Testament.
May the Lord have mercy on his people.
