By the time Butler wrote his book, first published in 1935, the United States had been involved in the empire business for about forty years.
In his essay “The Messianic Character of American Foreign Policy,” an essay written in 1990 at the time of the first war against Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, John Robbins described how America became an empire under President William McKinley during the Spanish American War, a war which Robbins notes was started by McKinley.
Robbin’s essay is well worth reading in its entirety, especially now as the powers that be are attempting to whip up war fever once again, this time over Ukraine, a war that, much like the Spanish American War, has largely been instigated by the U.S.
One interesting point that both Butler and Robbins have in common is their explicit identification of commercial interests as a key aspect of the American empire. In his essay, Robbins enumerated ten factors that had shaped American foreign policy during the 20th (and now 21st) century, one of which was “the protection of commercial, not national, interests.”
The introduction to War is a Racket quotes Butler thus,
I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912. I brought light to the Dominical Republic for American sugar interest in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested (10).
Of course, wars are never explicitly fought for such things as banking and oil interests. That’s why Butler titled his book War is a Racket. Butler defined a racket thus,
A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of people. Only a small “inside” group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes (23).
Those with ulterior motives in promoting wars will push their agenda under the aegis of some other supposed good. Defending democracy and fighting them over there so we don’t have to fight them over here are two popular reasons American politicians have given for sending American troops overseas. But the real reasons for American wars of choice are hidden from the public.
All this raises the question, what is the racket involved in the current war in Ukraine? What is it that the insiders know that the rest of us do not?
This is a question that I am not prepared to answer at this time. But while I do not consider myself able to answer that question fully, it appears that at least one purpose of the war is the advancement of the globalist agenda.
For example, George Soros’ Open Society Foundations put out a press release on March 3, stating, “The Open Society Foundations today are pledging an initial $25 million to launch the Ukraine Democracy Fund and urge other funders to join us in supporting civil society in Ukraine in response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s assault on democracy.”
Ask yourself this question, when was the last time George Soros was on the side of the angels? This is the same man that has funded leftist causes in America, perhaps most notoriously the so-called “Soros Prosecutors” in many of America’s largest cities that have helped facilitate mass lawlessness, including a record number of murders, in the districts under their charge.
Ask yourself another question, why is it that the U.S. has (or had until recently) numerous (I have heard reports of possibly as many as 26) bioweapons labs in Ukraine? The confirmation of the existence of these labs was given by Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland in testimony before Congress last week. Tass (yes, the old Soviet News agency is still around) reported on March 9 that,
Earlier, Igor Kirillov, who heads the Russian army’s radiation, chemical and biological protection force, reported that a network of over 30 biological labs was formed on Ukrainian soil on the orders of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) of the US Department of Defense. According to him, on February 24, they were all instructed by the Ukrainian Health Ministry to completely destroy biological agents located in the laboratories.
Could Tass be making this up? Yes, it could. It is also possible that it could be true. Given that Victoria Nuland essentially admitted the existence of these labs in her Congressional testimony (see here and here), it appears Tass is probably telling the truth. This raises the question what is the purpose of these labs? Are they developing the next “Covid” for the globalists to release on us? Is there some other purpose?
Interestingly, China has come out accusing the U.S. of having 336 biolabs in 30 countries. Is this true? Given the recent history with the U.S. funding gain of function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology where Covid apparently originated, it would be unwise to dismiss China’s charge out of hand.
Why are the Western powers along Ukrainian President Zelensky pushing all the popular degenerate liberal causes in that nation? Feminism and transgenderism are at the top of the list. In fact, Zelensky’s stance on any number of social issues would put him firmly in the progressive camp (see here and here).
Why does the Globalist, Vatican connected, even Satanic, World Economic Forum extend its “full solidarity” to Ukraine in the current conflict?
Then there are the good old-fashioned racketeers of the sort that Smedley Butler would wrote about. Take this headline, “Biden to send $350M in military aid to Ukraine.” The U.S. has been sending military aid to Ukraine for the past eight years, not to mention all the training the U.S. has given the Ukrainian military. This is on top of all the hundreds of millions and billions the U.S. already has sent to Ukraine, at least officially. Given the secrecy that surrounds the finances of the U.S. federal government, it’s reasonable to assume the total expenditure in Ukraine is larger, perhaps far larger, than is officially acknowledged.
Oh, and I almost forgot. It seems likely that some of that training and weaponry went to train neo-Nazi groups in Ukraine (see here and here). Why is America arming and training neo-Nazis?
When it comes to the Russian-Ukrainian War, I have more questions than answers. But at this stage, there are a number of indicators that strongly suggest that, once again, the elite are engaged in a war racket of some sort. American patriots need to remain vigilant, continue asking questions, and seeking answers.
One of the chief questions we should be asking is this, what does our interventionist foreign policy profit the nation?
The correct answer is it doesn’t.

Steve, if this article from the Christian Post (link below) which is not truly conservative in Reformed Theology is accurate on its quotes; and I haven’t looked for the Patriarch’s sermon, the reference to Georgetown University indicates that beyond the Jesuits fully embracing the LGBT community; I’m assuming that Putin is fully aware of the EU and Catholic American seeking world dominion. Besides financial greed and human depravity, as you know, religious ideologies are almost always the driving force to war. As for the Protestant Voice being nearly almost non-existence, Presbyterian David Steele (1807 to 1887) in his Notes on the Apocalypse gives reference to Rev 15:8 as to why there are no true Protestant Trumpets in comparison to the Reformation.

Thanks for sending the link, Tommy. It’s remarkable how much the Jesuits have influenced Protestant thinking in our time. I ran across an example by accident yesterday. The link at the bottom is to an article I found while searching for Just War Theory. The first item that came up was that article. It’s written for the Southern Baptists by a Jesuit educated professor (Georgetown) who is teaching at Georgetown. Amazing. https://erlc.com/resource-library/articles/the-history-and-purpose-of-just-war-doctrine/
Steve, you are right, AMAZING & UNREAL. We have got to be in, or near the height of the Apostasy (2nd Thess 2:1-12) when Baptist folks embrace Jesuits; and allow them to not only twist the Scriptures; but misrepresent ministers of the Old Paths. Putin is undoubtedly of a Pharisaic conservatism; but at least he is saying no to liberalism and the Catholic Agenda of the EU. If I’m not mistaken, 9 of the 11 founders of the EU were Catholic. They are still pushing for a Catholic Empire with modern day Crusades and working for another Inquisition. Luther, Knox, and Calvin had it right. Lord Help! Tommy
That’s a good point that you make about Catholic influence in the EU. In his book Mystery, Babylon the Great, I.A. Sadler goes into the details of the Catholic influence in the formation and expansion of the EU. He even calls the EU “The Fourth Reich,” seeing it as an extension of the Holy Roman Empire and Nazi Germany, which had significant ties to the Vatican.
Aaaand right on queue, the Vatican power play on Russia and Ukraine https://www.breitbart.com/faith/2022/03/16/pope-francis-to-consecrate-russia-and-ukraine-to-the-immaculate-heart-of-mary/
At least some of the comments are rebuking the Mary Worshipping Idolatry. Now if Putin backs down and peace is restored; then more Marianites will be given over to a stronger delusion than they already are. The Almighty’s most damning Judgement is spiritual delusion in conjunction with false doctrine. After the Reformation and spread of knowledge today, there is no excuse for these Marianites to stubbornly continue in this false worship. By all means, I’m no expert on the Russian Orthodox Church; but a brief search shows that they do differ with the Roman Catholic’s on the Immaculate Conception. Here is an interesting topic: https://greekreporter.com/2021/12/14/russia-orthodox-church-catholic-church/
Thanks for sending the article, Tommy. I’m a bit hazy on the details of Orthodoxy. I’m having lunch with a friend who used to be Orthodox. I have some questions for him. As part of their strangling back to Vatican II, I expect Rome will continue to try to absorb the Orthodox churches into herself.
