In case you didn’t know, the time of year formerly known as June is now Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. The president himself has said it, so it must be true. The White House proclamation announcing this momentous change reads in part,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in my by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2015 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon the people of the United States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate the great diversity of the American people.
Americans have a long history of ignoring the proclamations of various and sundry potentates, but this time the whole country seems willing to bear any burden to carry out the president’s call to stamp out prejudice and celebrate diversity. As proof, consider the following stories circulating in the mainstream press at this very moment:
- The Boy Scouts of America: After a long and successful court battle against the homosexual lobby, the leadership of the Boy Scouts of America is working overtime to bring the organization’s values in line with the spirit of the times. To this end, Boy Scouts president Robert Gates recently called for a reversal of the group’s policy of banning gay scout leaders. Gates exposed himself as an ethical relativist when he was quoted saying, “We must deal with the world as it is, not as we might wish it to be.”
- WNBA Players’ Arrest/Gay Wedding/Baby Announcement/Annulment: Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson, two star players in the WNBA, celebrated diversity by over a period of six weeks by successively getting themselves both arrested on charges of domestic violence, going through with their planned wedding anyway, announcing a baby, and then annulling the wedding. We are truly thankful for the fine example Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson have set for us. Doubtless, their actions will go far toward eliminating irrational prejudice against gay marriage.
- Bruce Jenner: Jenner
once competed against world class athletes, famously winning a gold medal in the decathlon at the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympic. Jenner now competes with the Kardashian sisters, fighting it out with them to see who can garner the trashiest tabloid headlines. Yes, Bruce has now become Caitlyn, without a doubt both the highest profile transgender person to date and a great encouragement to others seeking to follow in his twisted footsteps.
Needless to say, if you find any of these items freakish, outrageous, ill-advised, or immoral, you, my friend, are an impediment to moral progress. A benighted blockhead bitterly clinging to your guns and religion, a fellow badly in need of enlightenment. And as several Christian bakers and wedding photographers have found out, God forbid if you dare act on your beliefs. You will find the full force of the law crashing down upon your head to the cheers of the Social Justice Warriors.
Their Glory is Their Shame
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) cause has advanced at a speed and to an extent that has left many Christians shocked, myself included. I never thought I would find myself living in a country where sodomy was celebrated, while any opposition to it was squelched into embarrassed silence. How can people who engage in the grossest immorality find themselves in a position that they can publically boast about it as though it were a wonderful thing? And not only that, how is it that they find themselves is such a position of power as to force the entire country to dance to their tune?
These circumstances call to mind what the apostle Paul said to the Philippians. Writing of the licentious heathen in his day, Paul said of them, “Their glory is in their shame” (Philippians 3:19). That is, the very activities that were the pride of unbelievers in Paul’s day were the very things of which they should have been ashamed. Does this sound familiar? It appears Gay Pride Month is nothing new at all.
It is not often appreciated by men in modern times the extent to which classical Greece and Rome were pornographic societies. Homosexuality was openly advocated by Plato, whose Symposium was an extended argument for the superiority of homosexual love between men and boys. Such acts were often celebrated in Greek art. Excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum, towns buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79, have uncovered numerous examples of graphically obscene artwork. Given man’s fallen nature, none of this is surprising. It is to be expected.
In truth, sexual immorality is the default setting of mankind. Western Civilization, born as it was out of the Reformation and relying on the Bible for its ethics, was an exception to this. When people spoke of the United States as a Christian nation, that did not imply that all Americans were Christians. What it did mean is that the basis for nation’s morals was the Bible and those morals were more or less adhered to, even by those who were not themselves Christians.
But the Americans no longer believe the things that previous generations believed. As the influence of Christianity has waned, the old heathen morality has reasserted itself. The rise of the LGBT movement should be seen as the reassertion of heathen morality, long kept in check by the salutary influence of the Bible, what John Calvin called the second use of the law. Gay Pride Month is not the root of the problem. Rather, it is the symptom of a deeper spiritual problem involving society’s rejection of Jesus Christ in favor of secular philosophy.
The Proper Christian Response
As Christians, our job is to preach the Law and the Gospel. The Law of God condemns the entire LGBT agenda as grossly immoral. The Gospel holds out the hope of salvation to all who will lay hold of it by faith alone. In other words, we are to boldly use the one offensive weapon among the armament of the Christian soldier, the Word of God. It is God who will fight this battle for us. It is God who will prevail.
About 2,500 years ago, another ungodly sovereign made another ungodly proclamation. It is recorded for us in Daniel 3 and reads,
To you it is commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages, that at the time you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, and psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, you shall fall down and worship the gold image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up; and whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.
Three young Hebrew men refused to obey the order, were arrested and condemned to death. As we know, God delivered them in miraculous fashion as a reward for their faithfulness, and to this day the names of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego are held in high honor.
Christians, as the apostle Peter reminded the Sanhedrin, must obey God rather than men. Thankfully we do not live in a time when failure to carry out a presidential proclamation to celebrate LGBT diversity is met with execution. But who knows? Perhaps that day will come. But whatever punishment ungodly rulers may threaten, may those of us in Christ be found faithful
Such a refreshing post..Thank you for proclaiming the truth. God bless you!
Thanks, Hailey! I’m glad this post was helpful to you.
The flood has come. Who would have thought that between writing this piece and today, there would now be a serious contender for the Presidency in 2020 who is a homosexual.
Thank the Lord that He has given us His Word as a sure anchor of truth.
We’re falling fast, John. We’re falling fast.
